MineSDG is a research-grade R framework designed to bridge the gap between raw operational data and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While generic tools rely on text-mining, MineSDG utilizes a quantitative “Sector Intelligence” layer to provide deep, actionable insights into mining sustainability.
The framework is architected for multi-source data agility, enabling users to integrate global sustainability indicators with regional benchmarks and internal corporate metrics to create a unified “Single Source of Truth” for ESG performance.
It transforms fragmented metrics into executive-ready intelligence through four analytical pillars:
Agnostic Data Integration: Robust retrieval and harmonization of global, regional, and sector-specific sustainability datasets.
Advanced Statistical Diagnostics: Trend analysis, volatility indexing, and convergence testing.
Mining-Specific Interpretation: Mapping indicators to industry domains like Biodiversity & Land or Resource Efficiency.
Strategic Reporting: Automated generation of board-ready executive summaries and publication-quality visualizations.
Key Capabilities
SDG Analytics Engine: Perform CAGR calculations, linear trend slopes, and percent change analysis on sustainability metrics.
Stability & Risk Diagnostics: Evaluate ESG risk through volatility indexing and coefficient of variation.
Benchmarking & Ranking: Compare performance against global benchmarks with automated Z-scoring and percentile ranking.
Mining Risk Engine: Generate sector-aware risk profiles by integrating indicator trends with domain-specific relevance scoring.
Composite ESG Indexing: Build weighted indices (e.g., Biodiversity, Climate, or Social Impact) tailored to the mining sector’s materiality.
Installation
The stable version (v0.1.0) of MineSDG is available as a formal release. You can install it directly from GitHub like so:
# install.packages("devtools")
devtools::install_github("imanojkumar/MineSDG@v0.1.0")For the latest version (v0.4.0), including the ESG Reporting Layer (GRI, ICMM, BRSR), the Disclosure Bundle, Site KPI Engine, SDG Scorecards, the SDG-Mining Ontology, bundled demo datasets, and the Shiny Dashboard:
# install.packages("devtools")
devtools::install_github("imanojkumar/MineSDG")New in v0.4.0: ESG Reporting Layer
MineSDG is now a reporting engine: one call turns site data into a GRI, ICMM or BRSR report, with every number sourced from the existing KPI engine through the disclosure bundle (single source of truth, zero duplicate calculations):
library(MineSDG)
# GRI 302/303/304/305/306/403/413 in one line
rep <- generate_gri_report(demo_mine_sites, site_id = "CU-ATAC",
years = 2022:2024)
gri_content_index(rep)
# ICMM: board scorecard, traffic lights, recommendations
icmm <- generate_icmm_report(demo_mine_sites, site_id = "CU-ATAC",
years = 2023:2024)
icmm$extras$traffic_lights
# BRSR Sections A/B/C (INR lakh via entity_meta$fx_usd_inr)
generate_brsr_kpis(demo_mine_sites, site_id = "CO-JHAR",
years = 2023:2024,
entity_meta = list(fx_usd_inr = 83.2))
# Render to HTML / PDF / DOCX (Quarto) or Excel (openxlsx2)
render_minesdg_report(rep, "gri_2024.pdf", format = "pdf")
write_report_xlsx(rep, "gri_2024.xlsx")Framework mappings are data (gri_crosswalk, icmm_crosswalk, brsr_crosswalk): adding a disclosure means editing a dataset, not code. The dashboard gains Benchmark and Radar tabs (score_portfolio_sdg(), plot_sdg_radar(), plot_domain_radar()). Tutorial: vignette("esg-reporting").
New in v0.3.0: Site Intelligence & Dashboard
MineSDG now works at site level as well as country level — fully offline, on bundled demo data or your own:
library(MineSDG)
# Score one site-year against SDG-aligned KPI thresholds
site <- demo_mine_sites[demo_mine_sites$site_id == "CU-ATAC" &
demo_mine_sites$year == 2024, ]
score_site_sdg(site)
#> Composite score: 66.8 / 100 | Grade: C
# Framework-referenced calculators (GRI 11 / ICMM / SASB / GHG Protocol)
calculate_ghg_intensity(636000, 342000, 18481) # SDG 13
calculate_safety_performance(6400000, 32, 10) # SDG 8.8 (TRIFR/LTIFR)
calculate_waste_intensity(18481, 17750, 45412) # SDG 12
# Explore the SDG-to-mining ontology and KPI registry
explore_sdg_ontology(domain = "water")
list_mining_kpis(sdg_goal = 8)
# Launch the interactive dashboard (requires shiny)
run_minesdg_dashboard()Tutorials: vignette("site-level-kpis") and vignette("sdg-ontology-and-scorecard").
Quick Start: Strategic Workflow
MineSDG leverages open-access global data. No API keys are required for standard retrieval, allowing you to move from raw data to sector-specific intelligence in seconds:
The following example demonstrates how to retrieve data, analyze trends, and generate a mining-specific risk profile:
library(MineSDG)
# 1. Retrieve Global Data (e.g., Land Degradation / SDG 15.3.1)
# Accesses the official UN SDG API directly
dt <- fetch_sdg_country_data(
indicator = "15.3.1",
country = "IND",
year_range = c(2015, 2020)
)
# 2. Generate Sector-Specific Risk Profile
# Integrates trend, volatility, and domain relevance
risk_profile <- generate_mining_risk_profile(dt, indicator = "15.3.1")
# 3. View Executive Summary
# Produces board-ready narrative interpretation
cat(risk_profile$executive_summary)
# 4. Visualize the Strategic Trend
